The conditions in which I grew up were not terrible; I was never starving or physically abused, though I was emotionally abused and I don't find that much better, only less visible. Financially, we moved between poor, middle class, and middle-upper class. There was usually a middle class average.
However, throughout my childhood many things were chaotic, unpredictable and emotionally jarring including intense emotional abuse. As a child, this was very difficult and creating bad neural programming and associations with my world. In later posts I'll further explain all of that, though I'd like to save most of it for an autobiography.
What you need to know is through suffering and fear, I was eventually able to take a giant leap and change my future for the better - and you can do the same thing!
From challenges come opportunities for growth and learning. Each of us comes to, and finds a different path that motivates us to move onward in this life and find the inner strength to continue. The religions, disciplines and practices of modality are each unique to that individual.
However, there are certain universal truths that are inherent in most all modalities of logic, science and religion. Those are the essence of what I believe in, have studied, and will share with those who read this blog. My intense study in the personal development practices I have found have triggered a deep yearning for me to continue to understand this world and our place in it better, and to help guide those who are held back by fear. At the same time, I continue to work with my own fear and areas in need of improvement.
What does fear hold us back from? Our inner flame, our true selves, our bliss. You've felt those moments before when time stops for that one breath and you feel at one with yourself. That was your inner flame. I enjoy this writing from mindbodygreen.com on inner flame which describes fire within nicely, "From the physical to the spiritual, fire is essential for fueling everything from our digestion to our dreams. If we are looking to launch a project or bring visions to life, an inexhaustible flame is needed. Fire is our passion, the excitement in our belly on which our dreams take flight. For many, the fuel necessary to get through a day leaves little left over to start igniting our dreams. In extreme circumstances, the flame has simply burnt out.
By its very nature fire rises up; it uplifts our spirit and warms our heart. We all need a well-tended fire to maintain vitality, but what can we do when the fire dies out? When the energetic balance between giving and receiving has come undone, we suffer burn out. Modern lifestyles have placed excessive demands on our time and energy leaving us over-scheduled, overworked and overextended in all areas of our life. Long hours of care-taking may leave little time for taking care of our self, but this time is essential if we expect to live a life of purpose and meaning. There is no recipe or formula that will take care of burn out for everyone but burn out is a call to take action in the art of self-care. And the only place to find the answer is to listen to your needs from within. This requires time and attention devoted each and every day. A simple yet profound practice that can help rekindle the inner flame is the inner smile. A smile has the power to heal and transform. Recall what it feels like to receive a smile, especially unexpectedly. Something inside us lights up. That is just the spark necessary to reignite the flame"
The inner flame comes from the place in us that we have ignored or been told to cover up.
There are many ways to work at regaining this essence of ours. It begins with being aware of what is around us, opening our eyes to the world as it is. From there we can begin to see magic in the most unexpected places. Things as silly as the breeze from the wind on our skin can be magical, touching, spiritual, and connect us to the earth. We can become entangled with something beyond ourselves. This beyond is known as many things in different religions. Some call it G-d, Jesus, Universe, Energy, etc. Whatever it is to you, embrace it.
True peace starts with a connection to ourselves and to everything around us. Finding love in our hearts. Love is what heals. Touch is essential to human life, tender care. Babies have gotten the necessary food, rest, warmth and basic physical necessities. However, when not touched or held at all, they died. Children who were prone to sociopathic tendencies who had been subjected to a loving caring household where they were shown affection physically and emotionally found that the love actually offset those violent impulses.
The following quote is from a neuroscientist who found out that he has the brain of a psychopath, "But why, in the light of the fact I have all of the biological markers for psychopathy, including a turned off limbic system, the high risk genetic alleles, and the attendant behaviors, including well over half of those listed in the psychopathy tests and low emotional empathy, did I turn out to be a successful professor and family man? One most likely reason is that although I have the genetic makeup of a “born” psychopath, some of those very same “risk” genes in someone showered with love, versus abuse or abandonment, from childbirth through the critical first few years of life, appear to offset the psychopathy-inducing effects of the other “risk” genes."- James Fallon, Neuroscientist
There are multiple factors related to a person's happiness, personality, health and other characteristics and it's not as simple as merely nature or nurture. In part, it's a combination of nature AND nurture, environmental components, relational components, perception and more. It is not the result of karmic reincarnation debts, astrological events, or God's will. There's more to know than that. Causes and reactions.
There will be many different subjects covered here in more detail. What inspires and motivates us? How can we do better in our lives? What is the science behind certain controversial issues? What is the humanity connecting us? For now, can you start to see how magic is all around us? And maybe how we can create our very own magic in our lives. Put what you thought you knew aside... Let your inner fire burn brightly!
Many find that what they kept yearning for, grasping and reaching for, was right there in front of them all along.
"Sparks fly as the fires burn at midnight, Stars are out and magic is here, the stars are out and magic is here."
