My Richland Chronicle Articles

I spent time doing many things this last semester at Richland college. One of them was writing for the Richland Chronicle. I wasn't able to make all the meetings but I enjoyed my time tremendously. I wrote about students with visions and enjoyed bringing a little light to the paper.

Here are my articles from Fall 2013 in order:

Visions of self-insight and growth: Nini Sterling
http://www.richlandchronicle.com/column/visions-of-self-insight-and-growth-1.3043144

Visions of light - Changing Institutionalized Inequalities: Elizabeth Kennickell

Spreading smiles and making a difference: Lauren Hollingsworth

Visions of light - Challenging the definition of life: Aaron Thomas
http://www.richlandchronicle.com/news/visions-of-light-challenging-the-definition-of-life-1.3128419

I really got a lot of joy out of interviewing these people. When they spoke about what they were passionate about I could see sparks of  light in their eyes, and it made my heart feel warm. When I saw the interview taken to paper, taken to the editing process and finally made into an issue, it was awesome. I am very thankful to the advisors who helped me out, especially Larry who sat down with me a couple times to edit down articles. I'm of course thankful to Kisten and Christian as well.

I was so joyful to see someone's story out there for everyone to read and use to get inspired and informed. I can see each person with their vision making a huge positive difference in this world, and I love it.

Signing out until next time.

Love,

Three Success Principles

Not sure if any of you have seen this video, I made it on May 4th of 2012. It was a spark of insight and excitement that happened when I found some of Brendon Burchard's work. As you can see, I was moved by the excitement and thrill he showed in making his videos. I submitted the video for a contest and didn't win, but I am still happy I made this video and it gives me great ideas for future work in this field.

The Richland Visionary Club

I am President of the Richland Visionary Club. (visit the facebook page!) This is a club at my local community college which is just now in the stages of becoming official. It is for students who have a vision for change in themselves, academically or spiritually, who want to come together to share their ideas with each other, network, and gain support for their goals and visions.

Currently we are meeting in the Cafeteria but soon we will have our own class room and a place for one presenter every month to show us their visions and ideas. A place to brainstorm and discuss real ideas and solutions for change. Things as big as Global social change and as small as writing a book may be shared!

This last Tuesday I set up a booth near the cafeteria to inform students of the organization, it worked out great. I didn't bring with a table cover so I used my red scarf. I made a sign out of canvas board and I played some music while I sat there. I had another girl interested in change show up and she was such a help! She has some great ideas for advertising and gaining new students.

I hope this will continue to grow and can't wait to let you all know when we are an official club! Stay tuned til then.

In other news.... I found out recently about degreed.com which is a program still in beta designed to let us organize the learning we've attained from anywhere and put it all in one place. It is changing the future of education and I'm proud to be a part of the beta testing, though it's a bit buggy as of right now. Go and check out the site!

Today in Psychology

9/4/2012

It's interesting to study different courses that are meaning to understand life. There are a lot of little links between Philosophy and Psychology that are quite interesting. It's just a little frustrating at times to sit through a Psychology class that claims so heavily that because this and that is observed, tested and conclusive that it must be reality. I think there is more to us than we can ever explain or test. I guess with that attitude it may be hard to do anything related to research, but at the same time it opens up so many doors.

Today in class our teacher was talking about Behaviorists and Psycho-analysts. He brought up an example where there are two boys, one Billy and one Johnny. Every day Billy hits Johnny in the face. The school wants to stop this behavior and calls in these two people, the behaviorist and the psycho-analyst. The Psycho-analyst talks about how Billy must have a hard time at home and doesn't have any other way to get out his aggression. The behaviorist simply observes the actions and offers a punishment (or reward) system of taking $20 out of Billy's bank account every time he hits Johnny OR  giving Billy $20 dollars every time he doesn't hit Johnny. The conclusion was ended in a rather humorous way that the behaviorist was much more efficient in this example than the psycho-analyst because he was able to stop the boy doing the behavior that they wanted him to stop.

Here's my issue with this: Will taking $20 out of Billy's account whenever he hits Johnny prevent him from hitting Sarah? Or Michael? Will it prevent him from developing severe trauma from continuing to either outwardly express his internal issues that need dealing with and compassion, or hide his issues under camouflage. Will it help him contribute to other people's lives? Will it have ANY impact past Billy just not hitting Johnny? WILL IT LAST?

The Psycho-analyst expresses what he thinks is going on for Billy. I like this but it doesn't offer a solution.
The Behaviorist offers a solution to the problem, but only to THIS specific problem. I can almost guarantee that this is not the only issue Billy or people around Billy will be having.  It's temporary.

In my opinion, what was needed was a combination of the two. A combination that echoes the whole point of the triangle method I am working with. Billy IS hurting as the Psycho-analyst said, but he doesn't need drugs or a punishment/reward system. Billy needs to be heard, Billy needs discharge (release of his pent up hurt/emotions) Billy needs empathy and compassion. Billy needs to know his basic goodness, so that it will be easier to live in a bitter-sweet world.  Getting to know Billy and truly help Billy inside out would be the only true route to REALLY solving this issue.. Not just covering it over with tape... But stitching it inside out.

The reason for limited blog posts

Yes I actually have been achieving! I've just been achieving so much it's a little hard to update this blog with what I'm doing! Here's what I have going this month: Shambhala training 3 (a whole weekend of meditating, co-counseling women workshop weekend near Austin, Grandma coming sept 22nd, Govt, Psyc, Eng, Piano, Vocal Ensemble, Vocal privates, some social media work, some realty organization work, and Joe. Also NVC, RC and MEDITATION when I can fit it in.

Wow! If I can make it through this month okay, I can make it through ANYTHING. Is it stressful? Yes! But it is also exhilarating to put my best efforts and organizing into effect. To KNOW that I am capable, that after all these years, the PUSH of independence, the help of those who love me, the strength within me IS CAPABLE.  -- And so are all of you! Keep pushing, but remember to BREATHE, love yourself and treat yourself OFTEN as you work hard. You are precious and you'd get nothing accomplished if you didn't treat yourself like the wonderful being you are!

Till next time!

Love and light.

"Links to Like" Page

Added the "Links to Like" Page! This is a page meant to share with you some of the resources and knowledge I've found around and online. On This page I created a quick banner to share with you something I really found valuable, a visual representation of the actual process of success and growth. So many of us believe that success and growth need to continually be getting better, without any slip ups, in order to succeed. On the contrary, the reality can be quite different! We all slip up now and then but that is part of the learning process and it only helps fuel our passion and prepare us for the next major steps.

Since I started out the page sharing that with you, I also want to share with you a multitude of links that you may find useful. Some are for personal growth, some are grass roots or environmental, and some are just for fun! I hope you all enjoy the links, I'll be adding more as I

First Shared Accomplishment!

8/4/2012

Well yay! I just shared my first accomplishment, and that was creating this page of my website and editing the website in a way that is more in line with my vision. Until today the website was dark and had a profile picture I wasn't fond of. I've created a more light website design, I've edited a few things and added a few things. In addition, I have added this "Scrapbook of Accomplishment" page and created the banner on top for it! I will be posting all the things I do (as I remember) to this blog. It will be fun and you can all take a look and cheer me on! Hope you're all having a great week.
